E. A. Wallis Budge was an English Egyptologist, Orientalist, and philologist who worked for the British Museum and is best known for his numerous translations of ancient Egyptian texts. Born in 1857 in Bodmin, Cornwall, Budge developed a passion for languages at an early age and went on to study at Cambridge University.

After completing his studies, Budge joined the British Museum in 1883 and eventually became the Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities, a position he held until his retirement in 1924. During his time at the museum, Budge was involved in the acquisition of many important Egyptian artifacts, including the Rosetta Stone and the mummy of Cleopatra.

Budge's most significant contributions, however, came in the form of his translations of ancient Egyptian texts. He was a prolific writer and produced over 100 works on Egyptology, including translations of the Book of the Dead, the Book of Am-Tuat, and the Book of the Kings. His translations were highly regarded for their accuracy and readability and remain influential in the field of Egyptology to this day.

In addition to his work as a translator, Budge was also a collector of Egyptian antiquities and amassed a large personal collection of artifacts, many of which he donated to the British Museum upon his retirement. He was also a frequent traveler to Egypt and wrote several books about his experiences and observations of the country and its people.

Despite his contributions to the field of Egyptology, Budge was not without controversy. Some of his translations have been criticized for inaccuracies and biases, and his methods of acquisition of Egyptian artifacts have been called into question. However, his impact on the study of ancient Egyptian history and culture cannot be denied.

Budge passed away in 1934, leaving behind a rich legacy of scholarship and a lasting influence on the study of ancient Egypt. His translations and writings continue to be studied and referenced by Egyptologists and historians, ensuring that his work will be remembered and appreciated for years to come.
